THE UNDERGROUND MUSEUM: ROY DECARAVA

EXHIBITION DESIGN

Roy DeCarava invented a Twilight Zone System, shooting in low light, with no flash, and producing B&W photographs that were, in the most extreme cases, as low-contrast as an Ad Reinhardt black painting. Best known as a chronicler of Harlem life, DeCarava also produced luminous  photographic abstractions, such as Water and Sunbeams (about 1960) and Interior, Light on Curtains (1979). All were on view at the Underground Museum in Roy DeCarava: The Work of Art.

Wendy DeCarava, the artist's daughter, curated the selection of about 50 prints, and Commonwealth Projects worked in depth to produce the exhibition including all installation, programming and collateral.
